The deployment of Pershing tanks took place only at the very end of the fighting in Europe, finally providing American armored divisions with a machine capable of facing heavy German tanks in direct combat. They featured a powerful 90mm gun and excellent armor, which provided the crew with a much higher chance of survival compared to the older Shermans. Although only a limited number of these vehicles saw action before the war ended, they became the foundation for an entire postwar generation of American tanks and proved highly effective during the subsequent conflict on the Korean Peninsula.
