Developed in the 1970s, the A-10 Thunderbolt II was literally built around the massive 30 mm GAU-8/A Avenger seven-barrel rotary cannon, capable of destroying heavily armored vehicles. The aircraft boasts extreme survivability, achieved by armor-plating key systems and protecting the pilot in a titanium bathtub. The distinct placement of the engines high on the fuselage reduces their vulnerability to ground fire. The A-10 has become a symbol of numerous conflicts, from Operation Desert Storm to missions in Afghanistan, with the modernized A-10C variants remaining in the US Air Force arsenal to this day.
