Designers modified the sweep angle of the MiG-17's wing and lengthened the fuselage, eliminating some of its predecessor's flaws during high-speed flight. The aircraft became famous especially during the Vietnam War, where, despite lacking modern radar equipment and guided missiles, its extreme agility and heavy cannon armament allowed it to successfully confront much more modern American fighters.
