The M46 tank was primarily created through an extensive modernization of the older M26 Pershing. The main improvement was the installation of a new engine and a more reliable transmission, which solved the mobility issues that the Pershing suffered from. The M46 was subsequently followed by the M47 model, which received an entirely new turret and an improved fire control system. While the M47 became a massively exported item under military aid to NATO allies, the M46 Patton went through a harsh baptism of fire during the Korean War, where it reliably faced North Korean armor.
