Japan's First Post-War Tank
The design of the Type 61 tank reflected the specific needs of the Japanese islands, which meant smaller dimensions and lower weight for easy transport on the local railway network. The machine was inspired by American tanks but received numerous modifications and a 90mm gun, which was the standard at the time. It served exclusively on Japanese territory, forming the backbone of armored forces throughout the sixties and seventies before being gradually replaced by the more modern Type 74.
