Mobile Artillery for the Blitzkrieg
The Hummel howitzer emerged from the urgent need to provide fast-advancing tank units with adequate artillery support that could keep pace with them. Designers created the unique Geschützwagen III/IV hybrid chassis, combining proven components from the Panzer III and Panzer IV tanks. The main armament consisted of a massive 15cm sFH 18/1 heavy field howitzer, mounted in a lightly armored, open-topped superstructure. The machine first made a significant impact during the massive tank Battle of Kursk.
