The Heavy Fighter Concept (Zerstörer)
The Bf-110 was designed in the 1930s with the vision of a heavily armed long-range fighter that could escort bombers deep into enemy territory. The aircraft featured powerful forward-firing armament concentrated in the nose, making it a devastating weapon against ground targets and bomber formations. Although it became apparent during the Battle of Britain that it lagged behind lighter single-engine fighters in maneuverability, the Bf-110 found highly successful applications in other theaters as a fighter-bomber, reconnaissance aircraft, and, above all, a feared night fighter.
