A Deadly Gun on a Light Chassis
The Nashorn was created as a temporary solution to the urgent need for a mobile anti-tank weapon capable of countering heavily armored Soviet machines. Designers utilized the hybrid Geschützwagen III/IV chassis and mounted the feared 8.8cm PaK 43/1 anti-tank gun on it. Although the crew was protected only by light, open-topped armor, the extreme range and penetration of the gun allowed it to destroy enemy tanks before they could even get within effective firing range. The Nashorn thus claimed numerous successes on the Eastern Front and in Italy.
