Speed at the Expense of Armor
The design of the Crusader tank fully corresponded to the British doctrine of cruiser tanks at the time. The emphasis was placed primarily on high speed and mobility, which, however, took its toll in the form of weaker armor. Despite initial reliability problems, these machines became the main striking force of British armored divisions in North Africa and played a key role in the battles of Tobruk and El Alamein before being gradually replaced by American Sherman tanks and British Cromwell models.
