The Matilda II tank was designed with maximum crew protection in mind while supporting attacking infantry. During the battles in North Africa, its armor proved practically immune to contemporary Italian and most German anti-tank weapons. Although the machine was slow and its two-pounder gun could not fire effective high-explosive ammunition against infantry, it presented an almost unsolvable problem for Axis forces in 1940 and 1941, until the German army began deploying their famous 88mm anti-aircraft guns en masse.
