The Delta-Winged Deterrent
The Vulcan was designed in the 1950s as a high-altitude strategic bomber capable of carrying nuclear weapons deep into enemy territory. Alongside the Valiant and Victor, it formed the famous British "V-bomber" force. Although primarily a nuclear deterrent, it saw its most famous combat deployment in a conventional bombing role. During the Falklands War in 1982, Vulcans flying from Ascension Island undertook extremely long-range missions (Operation Black Buck), which were masterpieces of logistics and in-flight refueling.
