Designers utilized the proven chassis of the T-34 medium tank and fitted it with a fixed sloped casemate. The early SU-85 version carried a powerful 85mm gun that could reliably penetrate enemy armor. It was later followed by the even more formidable SU-100 type equipped with a 100mm gun, whose destructive power commanded respect on the battlefields until the very end of the war and long after.
