The first SU-152 type was built on the KV-1S heavy tank chassis, while the later and more refined ISU-152 utilized the robust foundation of the modern IS tank. Both vehicles carried a massive 152mm howitzer-gun. Due to the immense kinetic energy of the fired shells, these machines could destroy heavy German Tiger and Panther tanks even upon impact without necessarily penetrating their armor—the force of the explosion often completely blew off the enemy turret. They also successfully served as heavy siege weapons for destroying concrete fortifications.
