The SR-71 was designed in the secretive Skunk Works division led by the brilliant Kelly Johnson. To withstand the extreme temperatures generated by air friction while flying at three times the speed of sound, its airframe had to be made of titanium. The Blackbird carried no armament—its only and perfect defense against enemy missiles and fighters was its incredible speed and unattainable altitude. Throughout its long service, not a single aircraft was lost to enemy fire.
