The Master of Low-Level Flight
The Tornado was developed in three main versions: the IDS (Interdictor/Strike) for ground attack, the ECR for reconnaissance and electronic warfare, and the ADV fighter variant. Its greatest asset was its terrain-following radar system, which allowed the aircraft to fly at speeds over 1,000 km/h just a few dozen meters above the ground, completely beneath enemy air defense radars. Tornado aircraft fully and highly successfully demonstrated their devastating capabilities and massive payload capacity during the Gulf War in 1991.
