The Flying Tank
The P-47 Thunderbolt was powered by a massive Pratt & Whitney radial engine with a turbosupercharger, making it an excellent high-altitude fighter and bomber escort. Later, however, it found its true calling as a feared ground-attack aircraft. Thanks to its incredible durability, eight .50 caliber machine guns, and the ability to carry a huge amount of bombs and rockets, it posed a deadly threat to enemy tanks, trains, and convoys. Pilots loved the Thunderbolts because they could often bring them home even with heavy damage.
