This aircraft is structurally based on the standard MD-81 version but was developed for operations in more demanding environments. The major technological upgrade was the installation of much more powerful engines with higher thrust. Thanks to them, the eighty-two could effortlessly operate from airports located at high altitudes or in areas with very high temperatures, where weaker aircraft would lose performance. The typical silhouette with rear-mounted engines and a T-tail was naturally completely retained.
