The First and Only Atomic Cannon
The gigantic 280mm cannon was developed in the early nineteen fifties with one primary goal which was to provide the US Army with the capability to fire tactical nuclear projectiles. The system consisted of the cannon itself and two specially modified heavy tractor trucks that ensured its transport and precise placement into the firing position. Atomic Annie made history in 1953 when it successfully fired a live nuclear shell at a test range in Nevada. Although this weapon was soon rendered obsolete by missile systems, it remains a unique memento of its time.
