A Two-Tier Veteran of the African Desert
The design of the M3 tank was an emergency solution to quickly provide the Allies with a tank armed with a powerful 75mm gun. Because the Americans could not manufacture a sufficiently large rotating turret at the time, they placed the main gun in a hull sponson on the right side, while a smaller 37mm gun was housed in a fully rotating turret on top. The machines were produced in two main variants: the British version with a modified, lower turret was designated the M3 Grant, while the original American version with a high command cupola was named the M3 Lee. Despite their high silhouette and limited traverse of the main gun, these machines were an indispensable asset for British forces in Libya and Egypt in 1942, capable of facing German Panzer III and IV tanks.
