The lightweight amphibious M113 transporter entered service in the nineteen sixties and immediately became the backbone of the American mechanized infantry. Thanks to its boxy shape made of light aluminum alloys, it offered plenty of space for troops and easy adaptability for various roles. During the Vietnam War, the heavily armed ACAV version designed for convoy escort became particularly famous. The same chassis was also used for the M163 Vulcan self-propelled anti-aircraft system, which was equipped with a rotating six-barrel 20mm cannon for destroying low-flying targets and enemy personnel.
