Wooden Bogatyrs with a Radial Heart

While the initial types of Soviet fighters often fell short against German machines, the arrival of Lavochkin aircraft with powerful, air-cooled Shvetsov radial engines radically changed the situation. The aircraft, although utilizing a significant amount of specially treated wood in their construction due to shortages of strategic materials, offered excellent performance at low and medium altitudes. The La-7 version then represented the pinnacle of this developmental effort. It featured improved aerodynamics, lower weight, and excellent maneuverability, making it the preferred machine of many top Allied fighter aces, including Ivan Kozhedub himself.
