The KV-85 tank was designed in 1943 as a temporary solution until the development of the entirely new IS heavy tank was completed. Designers combined the modified hull of the KV-1S tank with a new, bulkier turret housing a powerful 85mm anti-aircraft gun. This weapon could finally effectively penetrate the thick armor of enemy Tiger and Panther machines on the battlefield. Although only a limited number were produced, these tanks helped bridge a critical period on the Eastern Front.
