A Crushing Response to German Cats
The IS-2 tank was developed as a direct response to the emergence of heavy German Tiger and Panther tanks, against which older Soviet equipment lagged behind. Its main weapon became a massive 122mm gun that could destroy any enemy armor at long range. The thick and sloped armor of the turret and hull provided the crew with excellent protection. These machines played a key role in breaking through German defenses on the Eastern Front and became one of the symbols of the final capture of Berlin.
