A Wooden Jet Fighter

The He-162 project emerged in the desperate situation at the end of the war when the Luftwaffe urgently needed a mass-produced jet fighter. Due to a shortage of strategic raw materials, the aircraft was designed to be built largely of available wood. An incredible 69 days separated the start of the project from the first test flight. The machine was powered by a single BMW turbojet engine unconventionally mounted on the back of the fuselage. Although it was a technologically advanced aircraft, it saw minimal combat, and most machines fell into the hands of the Allies as captured prizes.

Collector's Value and Captured Versions

For collectors of military hardware, the He-162 represents an attractive display piece. In our category, we offer metal and plastic models in the 1:72 scale that interestingly reflect the post-war fate of these machines. You will find captured versions tested by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) from the Oxford brand, or machines evaluated in the Soviet Union produced by Easy Model. These models are characterized by historical accuracy, a clean surface finish, and detailed rendering of the specific dorsal engine nacelle and twin tail fins.
