Heinkel He-111: Backbone of the Bomber Force
Originally, the He-111 was developed under the guise of a civilian transport aircraft, but its military application was planned from the outset. A characteristic feature of the machine was its extensively glazed, asymmetrical nose, which provided the crew with an excellent view but also made them vulnerable to frontal attacks by enemy fighters. The aircraft could carry up to 2500 kg of bombs and represented a reliable platform with a good payload, though as the war progressed, its lower speed and weaker defensive armament became apparent.
