The Hero of the Battle of Britain
The Hurricane was characterized by its incredibly durable, partially fabric-covered construction, which could withstand heavy battle damage and allowed for quick field repairs right on the airstrip. Thanks to its wide-track landing gear, it was stable upon landing, and in the air, it provided a reliable firing platform for its eight machine guns. During the Battle of Britain, it was the Hurricane squadrons that were tasked with breaking up formations of heavy enemy bombers, while the Spitfires tied up the fighter escorts.
