Dornier Do 17 and Evolution to Do 217
Originally a civil mail plane, the Dornier Do 17 was redesigned in the 1930s into a fast bomber that became one of the symbols of the Battle of Britain. Its slender silhouette made it difficult for fighters to target, but its limited bomb load necessitated the development of a more powerful successor. This was the Dornier Do 217, which retained the high-wing concept with a twin tail but offered significantly stronger engines, heavier defensive armament, and a much higher payload for bombs and guided weapons.
