This aircraft was created as a direct response to the demand for a machine that would be smaller than the giant Boeing 747 but capable of flying similarly long distances. From both a visual and technological standpoint, the most interesting feature of the aircraft is the placement of the third jet engine. Engineers decided to build it directly into the massive root of the vertical tail surface. They did not choose this design by chance – it ensured a direct and clean airflow to the engine and, unlike the integrated engines of the competition, allowed mechanics much easier and faster service access.
