The Whispering Giant in the Sky
From a technological standpoint, this machine represented a huge step forward in travel comfort. While the skies at the time were dominated by noisy and vibrating piston-engine aircraft, the Bristol Britannia introduced a quartet of advanced Proteus turboprop engines. They ran so smoothly and quietly that the aircraft immediately earned the famous nickname Whispering Giant among passengers and flight crews alike. It offered passengers an unprecedentedly quiet and comfortable flight for its time, even on very long intercontinental routes, making it the pride of British aviation.
