The Whispering Death
The Beaufighter was developed rapidly on the eve of the war from the Beaufort torpedo bomber. Thanks to its incredible firepower (four 20mm cannons in the nose plus machine guns in the wings), it became a literal instrument of destruction. It gained fame as the first effective British night fighter equipped with airborne radar, but it also excelled in low-level strikes over the sea. During operations in the Pacific and Burma, its relatively quiet Hercules sleeve-valve engines earned it the chilling nickname "Whispering Death" from enemy soldiers.
