Hotel Mode and Maximum Efficiency
These machines were designed with one main goal, which is maximum fuel efficiency and the ability to operate from short regional airports. A technological rarity of ATR aircraft is the so-called Hotel mode. Instead of a traditional and heavy auxiliary power unit (APU) in the tail, engineers utilize the right engine. It can be started on the ground, but a special brake locks the propeller from turning. The engine thus acts as a generator, supplying the aircraft with electricity and air conditioning the passenger cabin without the rotating blades endangering ground personnel.
