The Antonov An-12 represented a huge technological leap for the Eastern Bloc, primarily due to the integration of a rear cargo ramp. This solution enabled lightning-fast loading and unloading of heavy military equipment and seamless execution of airborne drops. The aircraft is powered by a quartet of reliable turboprop engines, giving it excellent flight characteristics and the ability to operate from unpaved field airports. An interesting detail of many military versions was also the defensive gun turret located in the rear of the fuselage.
