About the North American P-51 Mustang: The North American P-51 Mustang is a legendary American fighter aircraft that became one of the symbols of the Allied victory in World War II and later successfully served in the Korean War.
The development of the aircraft began in 1940 under the leadership of chief designer Edgar Schmued at North American Aviation. The P-51 Mustang was originally developed on order from the British Royal Air Force (RAF), which required a modern and fast fighter. The real turning point in his career, however, came when the original engine was replaced by a British inline twelve-cylinder Rolls-Royce Merlin (produced in the USA under the designation Packard V-1650). Thanks to this engine, the Mustang reached speeds of over 700 km/h and acquired excellent flight characteristics at high altitudes.
The Mustang became famous primarily as a long-range escort fighter. It was able to escort Allied bomber formations from Great Britain deep above the territory of the Third Reich and effectively protect them from attacks by the enemy Luftwaffe. In addition to air combat, the aircraft was also highly effective in reconnaissance and attacks on ground targets. Mustangs were massively deployed during the Normandy landings and operations in the Pacific.
In 1944, the most famous version, the P-51D, entered service. It differed from previous variants mainly in the new teardrop-shaped canopy of the cockpit, which provided the pilot with excellent all-round visibility, and in the reinforced armament of six 12.7 mm machine guns.
After the end of World War II, thousands of Mustangs served in the air forces of many countries around the world. Today, these machines are a sought-after rarity at air shows, and several dozen of them are still flying in private ownership - including one owned by actor Tom Cruise and featured in the film Top Gun: Maverick.
