Ilyushin Il-18 The Ilyushin Il-18 is a four-engine turboprop airliner with a capacity of up to 120 passengers developed by the Soviet Ilyushin Design Bureau in the mid-1950s. It was the first Soviet civil airliner equipped with turboprop engines. The Il-18 was originally designed to transport passengers on short and medium-haul routes, but was later modified for long flights across oceans. The aircraft was equipped with four high-performance Ivchenko AI-20 turboprop engines and had sufficient capability for long-distance flights. The Il-18 was very popular in the Soviet Union and other Warsaw Pact countries, but was also exported to other countries. The aircraft was used for both civil and military purposes, including the transport of troops and material. At present, all civil Il-18 aircraft have been retired from service, but some military versions still serve in certain countries as transport and reconnaissance aircraft.
