Douglas DC-3 Dakota / C-47 Skytrain The Douglas DC-3 (civilian version) and C-47 Skytrain (military version) are two versions of the same aircraft, which were developed in 1935 by the Douglas Aircraft Company in the USA. The DC-3/C-47 became one of the most successful and influential airliners in aviation history. The DC-3 was designed for civilian air transport, where it became a pioneer of the modern age of commercial aviation. Its capabilities enabled aviation to transition from relatively slow and uncomfortable aircraft to fast, reliable, and comfortable planes. The DC-3 was very popular with airlines all over the world and flew until the end of the 20th century. The C-47 Skytrain was a key aircraft during World War II and was used for transporting soldiers, material, equipment, and the wounded. After the war, the aircraft was used in many civilian roles, including air transport, agriculture, and forestry. The C-47 Skytrain was manufactured until 1945. In total, more than 16,000 units of this aircraft were produced.
