Concorde Concorde was a supersonic passenger airliner developed by the British Aircraft Corporation and Aérospatiale in the 1960s. The aircraft could reach speeds of up to Mach 2.04 (approx. 2,180 km/h) and was capable of crossing the Atlantic Ocean in less than 3.5 hours. Concorde was one of the fastest and highest-performing aircraft in the history of civil aviation. The first flight of Concorde took place in 1969, and the aircraft entered commercial service in 1976 with Air France and British Airways. A total of 20 Concorde aircraft were built, the last of which was produced in 1978. Most Concorde flights took place between Europe and North America, with ticket prices being very high and targeted at wealthier clientele. Concorde was characterized not only by its speed, but also by its luxurious interior and high-quality service. The aircraft had a capacity of up to 100 passengers and was equipped with modern avionics and other technological features. Concorde was also controversial due to its high noise and emission pollution, which led to operational restrictions and ultimately its retirement in 2003. Other factors leading to Concorde's retirement included financial losses for operators and a tragic accident in 2000, when an Air France Concorde crashed after takeoff from Paris airport, claiming 113 lives. Concorde remains a symbol of aviation innovation and an expression of technological progress in civil aviation to this day.
