SBD Dauntless
The SBD Dauntless was an American carrier-based fighter and bomber aircraft that was used during World War II. It was designed by the Douglas Aircraft Company and was known for its efficiency and reliability during the fighting in the Pacific. The SBD Dauntless was a monoplane with a wing folded down and powered by a Wright R-1820-52 Cyclone radial engine. It had a crew of two - a pilot and a gunner/navigator. It was equipped with two M2 Browning machine guns of .50 caliber (12.7 mm) and could carry up to 1,814 kg of bombs. The SBD Dauntless was used as a carrier-based fighter to protect ships from attacks by enemy aircraft and as a bomber to attack land targets. It was also used to scout and supply remote islands in the Pacific. The aircraft became famous at the Battle of Midway, when Dauntless attacks on the Japanese aircraft carriers Akagi, Kaga, Soryu and Hiryu had a decisive impact on the American victory. In total, more than 5,000 SBD Dauntless were produced and were deployed not only in the Pacific, but also in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. After the war, it was gradually replaced by more modern aircraft and was withdrawn from service in 1959.
