De Havilland DH.88 Comet
The De Havilland DH.88 Comet was a British racing aircraft developed in 1934 to participate in the MacRobertson Air Race, an international aviation race from England to Australia. The aircraft was designed as a fast and powerful machine that could outperform all other competitors and win the race. It was powered by two Gipsy Six engines with 210 horsepower each and reached speeds of up to 360 km/h. The DH.88 Comet won the MacRobertson Air Race in 1934, when the Caudron C.630 Simoun and Boeing 247D aircraft, which were closest to it, suffered various technical problems and were unable to complete the race. After its success in the race, the DH.88 Comet was manufactured for private customers as a fast transport aircraft. A total of 11 aircraft of this type were manufactured, several of which have been preserved and are on display in aviation museums. The DH.88 Comet remains an icon of the British aviation industry to this day.
