Boulton Paul Defiant
The Boulton Paul Defiant was a British two-seat fighter aircraft used during World War II. It was a unique aircraft that had armament consisting of a single 20 mm cannon mounted in a swivel turret at the rear of the aircraft. The Defiant was powered by a 1,030 horsepower Rolls-Royce Merlin III engine and reached a top speed of 490 km/h (490 mph). The aircraft was deployed during the Battle of Britain in 1940 where it proved effective against enemy fighters in daylight, it was mistaken for another aircraft but unfortunately was vulnerable from the other side which the German soldiers soon found out. Because of this, the Defiant was quickly replaced by more modern and powerful types of aircraft. A total of 1,064 Boulton Paul Defiant aircraft were produced in several versions.
