North American X-15
The North American X-15 was an experimental aircraft that was produced in the 1950s and 1960s in the USA. This aircraft was designed to reach extremely high speeds and altitudes to serve as a test platform for space flight research. The X-15 was powered by a rocket engine and was capable of reaching speeds of up to Mach 7.3 (approximately 9,000 km/h) and altitudes of up to 107 kilometres above the Earth's surface. During the flights, a number of experimental instruments and sensors were installed on the X-15 to collect valuable data on flight and atmospheric properties at different altitudes. In total, thirteen X-15s were built and a total of 199 flights were made between 1959 and 1968. Several records were achieved during the flights, including a speed record for manned flights and an altitude record for manned flights.
