SBD Dauntless
The SBD Dauntless was an American deck-based fighter and bomber aircraft that was used during World War II. It was designed by the Douglas Aircraft Company and was known for its effectiveness and reliability during combat in the Pacific Theater. The SBD Dauntless was a monoplane with a swept wing and powered by a Wright R-1820-52 Cyclone radial engine. It had two crew members - a pilot and a gunner/navigator. It was equipped with two M2 Browning .50 caliber (12.7 mm) machine guns and could carry up to 1,814 kg of bombs. The SBD Dauntless was used as a deck fighter aircraft to protect ships against attacks by enemy aircraft and as a bomber aircraft for attacks on ground targets. It was also used for reconnaissance and to resupply remote islands in the Pacific. The aircraft became famous at the Battle of Midway, when Dauntless attacks on the Japanese carriers Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, and Hiryu were decisive in the American victory. In total, more than 5,000 SBD Dauntless were produced and deployed not only in the Pacific, but also in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. After the war it was gradually replaced by more modern aircraft and was retired from service in 1959.
