The Panavia Tornado
The Panavia Tornado is a military supersonic multirole aircraft that was developed by a joint effort of Great Britain, Germany and Italy. The aircraft was created in response to the need to replace obsolete machines such as the Blackburn Buccaneer and the F-104 Starfighter. The first prototype flew in 1974 and series production ran from 1979 until 1998. The Tornado is primarily used for tactical reconnaissance, air attacks on ground targets, airspace protection and electronic warfare. The Tornado is a twin-engine aircraft with a delta wing that allows it to fly at supersonic speeds and high altitudes. It is equipped with advanced electronic systems, including radar, navigation and communications equipment, and a fire control system. The Tornado has been used in many conflicts, including the Gulf War, the Kosovo War and the Iraq War. As of 2019, there were about 200 Tornado aircraft in active service with the Royal Air Force and Luftwaffe. In 2019, it was announced that the Tornado aircraft would be retired from service in 2024 with all three countries involved in its development.
