Mitsubishi A6M Zero
The Mitsubishi A6M Zero was an airborne fighter aircraft of the Japanese Imperial Naval Air Force that was used during World War II. It was one of the most important Japanese aircraft of the time and was especially famous for its superior maneuverability and high speed. The A6M Zero was developed in 1937 and first flew in April 1939. The aircraft was very light and fast, giving it excellent manoeuvrability and the ability to successfully fight in one-on-one dogfights. It was powered by a twelve-cylinder in-line engine of the Nakajima Sakae type with 940 horsepower. The A6M was produced in several versions and used for both attacking ground targets and defending against enemy aircraft. It became a symbol of Japanese aerial success, especially in the first phase of the war when Japanese aircraft vastly outnumbered Allied aircraft. Although the A6M was very successful in its day, its undeniable advantages diminished as the war progressed and it was replaced by more modern aircraft types. In 1945, some Zero examples were used for so-called kamikaze attacks.
