The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23 is a Soviet supersonic fighter aircraft developed in the 1960s. It was designed as a multirole close-air combat aircraft and as an air defence fighter. The MiG-23 is equipped with a turbocharged engine that allows it to reach speeds of up to 2,500 km/h, and is also capable of high-speed maneuvering. The aircraft has also been equipped with advanced radar and electronic systems to track and destroy targets. The aircraft has been used in more than 30 countries and has been deployed in many conflicts around the world, including the Gulf War and the Soviet war in Afghanistan. It was also used in many other conflicts in the 1980s and 1990s. The MiG-23 was a highly successful aircraft that was admired for its high speed and maneuverability. However, it also had several limitations, such as limited flight endurance, which meant that it had to be escorted by tanker aircraft. It also had a limited ability to operate at low altitudes, which meant it was vulnerable to anti-aircraft defences.

In 1994, the Czech Air Force operated 17 MiG-23ML Flogger aircraft. These aircraft were quite obsolete at the time, but were still used for flight training and airspace defence. The aircraft were deployed within NATO to protect the airspace over the Czech Republic. In 1997, the MiG-23ML Flogger aircraft were retired from service by the Czech Air Force and replaced by more modern aircraft. Brig. Gen. Ing. Petr Hromek is a Czech soldier and aviator. He was born on 4 February 1966 in Brno. He graduated from the Military Aviation Academy in Košice and then served in various positions in the Czech Air Force. In 1999, he became commander of the 21st Tactical Aircraft Regiment in Čáslav, where he served until 2003. He then moved to the position of Chief of Staff of the 4th Air Base in Pardubice. In 2005 he was appointed commander of the 22nd Tactical Air Base in Náměšt' nad Oslavou. From 2010 to 2013, he worked at the Ministry of Defence of the Czech Republic as Deputy Director of the Defence Policy and Planning Section. In 2013 he was appointed Commander of the Air Force of the Czech Army and then in 2016 he was appointed Chief of the General Staff of the Czech Army. Brig. Gen. Ing. Petr Hromek is the recipient of many awards, including the Military Order of Valour and the Medal of Merit, and is considered one of the most distinguished Czech soldiers and airmen.
