Hawker Hurricane
The Hawker Hurricane was a British single-seat fighter aircraft that served during World War II. It was the first single-seat fighter aircraft with a fully retractable undercarriage and an upper wing with no visible fuselage, which allowed the pilot a better view. It was designed and manufactured by Hawker Aircraft Limited. The Hurricane was first deployed during the Battle of Britain in 1940 and became one of the key aircraft contributing to Britain's defence against the German Luftwaffe. The Hurricane was armed with cannon and machine guns and could carry a 500lb bomb. Throughout the war, improvements were made to its armament, engine and armour. In addition to being a fighter, it also served as a reconnaissance aircraft and an attack aircraft. In total, over 14,000 Hawker Hurricane aircraft of various versions were produced. After World War II, it was still in service in several countries and some aircraft were modified for civilian use. Several aircraft are still extant today and are displayed in museums around the world.
