About the Ju-87 “Stuka”:
The aircraft was designed as a two-seat dive bomber. It first flew in 1935 and had its baptism of fire a year later as part of the Condor Legion in the Spanish Civil War. It was armed with two 37 mm cannons and machine guns in the rear gunnery.
The aircraft was easily recognized due to the “gull-shaped” shape of the wings and fixed landing gear. The shape of the wings also served an important function – their shape made it easier to see the target.
Famous as an icon of the Blitzkrieg of 1939–1942, it was infamous for its bombing accuracy and the wailing siren that always sounded at the beginning of a maneuver.
The aircraft had several previously unused innovations, including automatic aerodynamic brakes that were activated if the pilot fell unconscious during a dive.
