At the time of the German invasion of the Soviet Union, the KV-1 tank was practically immune to fire from the vast majority of German anti-tank weapons of the era. Its extremely thick armor and 76mm gun made it a feared opponent that could often single-handedly halt the advance of entire enemy columns. Although the machine initially suffered from mechanical failures and lower mobility, its combat value was so high that captured units were gladly and extensively used by the German and Finnish armies themselves.
